The Original Scotsman

Atheists love to point out when Christians label a visible member of their tribe who’s screwed up by saying, “Well, if s/he did that, s/he was no Christian.” That is pathetic.

On the other hand, it’s often true. Don’t take it from me -

Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, “Jesus is my Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day,

“Lord did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?”

Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Get away from Me, you evil doer.”

"Atheists this... Atheists that..."

Atheists don't believe in god(s).

That is all Mak; accept it and move on.

Don't lie to yourself Rab. Atheism extends its tentacles into every area of your life.

Makarious please.

It does not.

It just means i do not believe in god(s).

You cannot possibly claim that i, for example, advocate eugenic sterilization because i don't believe in god(s).

You can't make any claims with certainty regarding me as a person, with the exception that i don't believe in god(s).

Explain, how can atheism 'extend its tentacles' as you describe?

I'll start you off - I have an avid passion for football (soccer), both playing and watching. How do my atheistic views affect this?

In fact it's religion with the Japanese porn like tentacles that reach into every part of your life. It tells you what to think, what to know, what to eat, when to do things, when not to, the list is endless.

Atheism tells me to do nothing, quite literally.

There are many atheist groups and they have a hard time getting members, you know why? Because outside the very obvious idea that there is no such thing as magic atheists have nothing else in common. Not politically, not culturally, nothing. In fact some of the biggest jerks I've ever met have been atheists and some of the sweetest hearts have been theists.

Some religions do. All, in fact except Christianity. Islam is one of the worst

Christianity can be reduced to, "Love God and do what you want."

Uh huh. Rather odd that you can condense a big honking book into a pithy little pennywise and I can't help but wonder about the 10 Commandments, Golden Rule (that most certainly contradicts "do what you want") but okay, I'll play.

And why do you need to love your god to do what you want?

What does you god do with your love?

Does he draw sustenance from it?

Without it would he be less somehow?

If Jesus was his messenger of love why did Jesus only visit a fraction of a fraction of humanity for only a (relatively speaking) split second? Why does your god prevent the billions of people who don't know about him knowing about him? If Jesus had say simultaneously sacrificed himself to himself in every culture in the world from the Aztec (heart torn out thrown into pit) to the Zulu (staked out in the Veld slathering in donkey guts near a pack of hyenas) wouldn't then the world be united in their love of your god due to the inarguable and universally observed miracle?

But no, instead of something completely convincing your god only tells a select few who then write it down and have to spend thousands of years trying to convince the rest of the world.

Something your god could do in a second.

If he existed.

And since he doesn't he ether doesn't exist or is incapable of making himself clear.

In either case, it'd be silly to worship.

Sal, Sal, Sal. You make me sigh - with sadness. Love as the Bible speaks of it, is a willed, volitional, desired action. A feeling may be involved but it certainly isn’t driven by feeling. When I love my wife, I do what pleases her because I want to please her. In that sense, I love my wife and do what I want. Love God and do what you want will entail fulfilling not just the letter of the law but the spirit of the law as is found in Jesus who put it into words, Matthew chapters 5 - 7. As a Christian matures in h/her relationship with Jesus, God’s will becomes my will and my will matches up with God’s will so doing what I want will fulfill the Golden Rule.

Why does God ask us to enter into a healed relationship with Him? Because humankind is fully alive only when we're in a healed and forgiven relationship with our Creator. I'm not saying that you can't have a decent life on your own. I did. You can. It's just that life is so much better on this side of the fence.

Mak, you are an idiot if you think our lack of belief in god(s) dictates when we do such things.

'Oh, a Mars bar, i'll eat that because i don't believe in god! Then, I'll do my report because i don't think god exists, oh, and i know, then i'll go and play football becasue i don't believe in god so much, but i certainly won't be playing my computer tonight becasue i don't believe in god'

Clown.
