Richard Dawkins and Priorities

This is Kevin Daily of WRCK. I’m here with exemplary atheist Richard Dawkins. I'm discussing with Mr. Dawkins some important issues that are confronting the people of the world. As you well know Mr. Dawkins:

Today, 25,000 children will starve to death.

Today, 10,000,000 children are working in sexual slavery.

Today AID’s will claim the lives thousands of children.

Today the gap between the rich and the poor is growing faster than at any other time in history. Well, of course you know that. You're living it.

Today our children are contracting STD’s at a rate that isn’t even matched by adults.

Today, people are choosing to die in numbers unequalled at any other time in history.

Today, despair, loneliness, and hopelessness are rampant in all age groups.

Mr. Dawkins, you are known to have in your possession a brilliant mind and impressive oratory skills. How are you putting those gifts to work as crisis after crises envelops the globe.”

“Well, thank you for having me on your show Kevin. While some scholars have described me as a reptile, I am indeed a brilliant man and it's good of you to notice. Actually I’m really excited about a new and if I may say so, a very worthy project; one that will bring a positive transformation to the way this organism, this phenotype if you will, lives his life. I’m working at putting together a group of people, 100's of thousands strong. Under my direction, this group of eager individuals will be encouraged to work as a cohesive unit so that where ever we are throughout the world, no matter the conditions, no matter the cost, no matter the peril that we may face, we can come up with a symbol that we can put on our T-shirts that says to the world, “I’m an atheist. Please pay attention to me!”

"My goodness! What an intriguing solution to the world’s problems. And what will this symbol be?”

"Well, at first Carl . . . ,”

“ Kevin . . . ,”

“Whatever. At first Kevin, I hesitated to use this symbol because I thought that simple folk, folk like you for example, might think that the A stands for Asshole. But, with nothing but good judgement holding me back, I went with a giant red letter A. That’s right! A for ass. . . I mean A for Atheist. No matter how dire the circumstance confronting my storm troopers, they will sweep across the globe with a giant letter A emblazoned across their chests. How’s that for meeting the needs of the world head on?"

"Unimaginable Richard. Unimaginable. Where can a person get one of these special T-shirts?"

"That's easy. Just send me $29.99 American for the shirt, plus $10.00 shipping and handling and by the end of the evening, I'll have some poor slob throw a $2.00 shirt in a box and ship it to you pronto."
“And will you then use this money to feed the starving children, or buy medicine or mosquito nets to protect from malaria or some other worthwhile project?”

“Better than that Casey.”

“Kevin.”

“Ya. Whatever. Actually I’m going to keep all the money from T-shirts and decals. You can’t be too rich, you know. And then I’m going to start an atheist charity calling for new donations from atheists the world over. Then, with that money I’m going to buy signs to put on bendy-buses in London. These signs will proclaim to all the world what a glorious philosophy of life we atheists possess.”

“And the signs will say . . .?”

“The signs will say, “I’m pretty sure that God does not exist, so screw the world - Eat - Drink and be Merry.” Oh and at the end of the day, if I'm feeling really generous, I'm going to start atheist indoctrination camps for children. They'll spring up all over the world. We haven't had a government based on Darwinist principles since the 1940's - mmmm those were heady days - Anyhow, yes, indoctrination camps for children. I envision 1000's of them all over the world.

“You’re quite a man Mr. Dawkins. You’re quite a man.”

(a) what are you doing to save the world? and don't tell me spreading the jesus, because jesus doesn't cure AIDS.

(b) when christians wear crosses, do you accuse them of shouting "I'm a christian, pay attention to me!"

So, are you choosing to go to Hell, or are you going to say the magic spell right before you die?

Mak,
This is pathetic.
That is all.

Personal - Talking about what I'm doing doesn't feel like the right thing to do. On the other hand, I'm satisfied with the degree to which I'm helping.

I think that someone being faithful to their partner because of they're following Jesus slows the spread of HIV. We certainly know for a fact that casual sex helps to spread it.

As for crosses? People wear them for lots of reasons. Even pagans attempt to make some sort of statement by wearing them. A Christian would be saying "Pay attention to what Jesus did for you on the cross."

Stanley, now is not the time to pick up your toys and go home. You are just at a place where you can really show me how your world-view understands the cosmos. At the very least help me by answering my last reply on "Nothing from nothing leaves . . ."

Come on Stanley. You owe it to the world to get your knowledge out there for everyone to see.

Stanley

I think you're getting a little addled. Who exactly are you addressing here?

Wow. Did Dawkins really say that? What a prick.

Actually, now that I come to think of it... why do so many evangelicals have it in for the good professor? I mean seriously? I realise he's not particulary likable: he's tactless and a bit overbearing, but that doesn't make him the Antichrist. Plus, I think the scarlet A is tacky. I'd have gone for a representation of His Noodlyness.

Also:

Today the gap between the rich and the poor is growing faster than at any other time in history.
Provide your sources.
Today our children are contracting STD’s at a rate that isn’t even matched by adults.
Provide your sources.
Today, people are choosing to die in numbers unequalled at any other time in history.
Provide your sources, and keep in mind that this figure should be represented as a percentage of total population.

Finally, what does "Darwinist principles" mean? Opposition to slavery? Desire for scientific evidence to support ones views? Mandatory ten year barnacle study?

Mak, the emnity that Dawkins receives from the theistic community makes me chuckle. You have to love a world where a brilliant zoologist can make millions from writing a simple book that pillories the irrationality of religious faith. I love it ....

No, that was Makarios doing what he does best.

And what is "God" doing about it?

Dawkins is making humanity a favor promoting atheism. Considering religion has only brought pain is the least we can do.

“why do so many evangelicals have it in for the good professor?”

It would take a book, but this is one indication:
"[The Christian God is] Arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it, a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynist, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” “Faith is one of the world’s great evils, comparable to the smallpox virus but harder to eradicate."

These comments are how Dawkins treats a loving God that he has almost no chance of ever understanding. Yet when someone wears a T-shirt that says

"Abortion Stops A Beating Heart,"

Dawkins accuses that person of wearing hate literature. This is atheism in the service of unredeemed human nature.
=============

"Finally, what does "Darwinist principles" mean?"

“If nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with the stronger, she wishes even less that a superior race should intermingle with an inferior one; because in such cases all her efforts, throughout hundreds of thousands of years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may thus be rendered futile.

But such a preservation goes hand-in-hand with the inexorable law that it is the strongest and the best who must triumph and that they have the right to endure. He who would live must fight. He who does not wish to fight in this world, where permanent struggle is the law of life, has not the right to exist.” Mein Kampf - London: Hurst & Blacket, 1939 - p239-240

What is "Darwinist" about that quote?

Thesauros said...

In my June post “You hear what dat bum just called me” an atheist by the name of Ian was explaining this to another person who seemed incapable of making the connection.

It reads as follows:

“A government that is based on the Darwinian principle of Natural Selection. That would be a Fascist government. In Fascism, only the strong survive. Same with evolution. . . . It has everything to do with the underlying principles of evolution. Survival of the fittest. That's what fascism is. Evolution is fascist. A government based on those principles would be fascist.”

Oh c'mon, that's not what I meant. Yes, he's tactless and not shy about expressing his opinion, but here's the thing: it's his opinion. It's not the opinion of an X, where X is a hugely important politition/widely regarded celebrity/popular american talk-show host. It's the opinion of a british biologist. Until the evangelicals started freaking out, nobody had heard of him outside those who read biology books.

Mein Kampf - London: Hurst & Blacket, 1939 - p239-240

Ahh, you mean Social Darwinism, the misnomer of the century. Even though I'd prefer you use a term like Eugenics or Mass Murder, since it's clearly against the morality Charles Darwin shows in his journals, I see what you were...

Wait, no I don't. What the heck does this have to do with Dawkins?

Extra points for invoking Godwins law, too.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. God's got a pretty high body count.

Yawn. Do you say anything true?

Oh, Makarios and his supporters seem to have a particular love for comparing anything they disagree with or don't understand to Hitler.

A government that is based on the Darwinian principle of Natural Selection...

Would a) be a government that tried to take it's zeitgeist from a scientific theory, similar to if a society were to condemn aircraft based on the Theory of Gravity.
Would b) be pretty much open to any interpretation whatsoever. Example: competition should be encouraged, and natural selection will weed out those unsuited for society. Each individual should succeed or fail on their own resources and abilities. If one fails, one is given no help from other individuals. Know what this "Darwinian" philosophy is called? Capitalism.

That would be a Fascist government.

Or a capitalist one. Or (if you wish to press me on any of these, go ahead) a communist one. Or a utopian one, or an anti-semite one, or a totalitarian one. Or a democracy, a theocracy, a heirachy, a dictatorship or even an idiocracy.

In Fascism, only the strong survive. Same with evolution...

In evolution, the best at survival survive, no matter the means they adopt to survive. Co-operating in a peaceful alliance is a route to survival, and a much more sensible one in comparison to global dominion.

It has everything to do with the underlying principles of evolution.
It has bugger all to do with evolution, and everything to do with Might makes Right.

Survival of the fittest.

Yeah, because that's a complete and accurate summarisation of the entire theory of evolution, and not an oversimplification at all. I suspect you do not know what "fittest" means in this context?

That's what fascism is.

The bland assersion that Might makes Right, which, in the right light and if you squint a little, looks a tiny bit like "Survival of the Fittest"?

Evolution is fascist.

Gravity is Communist, and I have it on good authority that the Germ Theory of Disease is a theocracy, slowly edging towards democracy.

A government based on those principles would be fascist.

Unless it was capitalist. Or democratic or theocratic or totalitarian or whatever heirachy the Decepticons use...
