What’s this atheist trying to prove?

Every so often, I see on atheist blogs the reporting of a Christian who has done something wrong. And this reporting is done in such a way as to make it sound worthy of front-page news. I saw it again yesterday and I do not understand what he’s trying to prove. I mean, by posting about Christians who do wrong things, you’re actually proving the Christian’s point exactly. We, all of us are tainted to the core by our sinful nature. Everything that humans touch turns to crap, including Christianity, the Church and Religion.

Remember atheists, we Christians are not the ones who are SELF-righteous or who see ourselves as “good.” That’s for you, the atheist who thinks you are good enough as your are. That’s for you the atheist to think of yourself of not needing any help let alone forgiveness. By pointing out OUR failures, you aren’t proving anything except what we’ve been telling you all along. We are sinful human beings in need of forgiveness.

For once, I have to admit that I agree with you.

The exception to this rule are sexual offences by Roman Catholic priests against children. The vow of celibacy is just another in a long line of crimes against humanity by the RC Church.

Most atheists only point out the wrong that Christians do because they're tired of Christians (like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell) telling everyone that atheists are going to hell, and that they have no morals. They are tired of the bigotry and hypocrisy. So it's quite understandable that they lash out.

I, for one, take great pleasure in pointing out that, despite what Christians may think, they're not morally superior just because they believe in some magical sky fairy. Most Christians I've talked to say that they are moral because they don't want to go to hell. Not because it's the right thing to do, but because they don't want to go to hell. That's absolutely reprehensible.

“telling everyone that atheists are going to hell,”

Well, if Jesus is correct, and He would know, then atheists ARE going to hell. How could anyone NOT warn people of that?

“and that they have no morals.”

Sadly some people do that. I’m sorry. It’s wrong.

“They are tired of the bigotry and hypocrisy.”

Aside from the fact that every person on earth is a bigot and a hypocrite, I’m interested in what you mean by hypocrisy. It seems to me is that only a Christian who told you that he was perfect, could be called a hypocrite regarding behaviours.

I am absolutely a new creation today compared to who I was before becoming a Christian. Telling you that does not imply that I don't do wrong things, so neither is it hypocrisy to tell you how far Jesus has brought me.

That is such an obvious lie that only you, the teller of the lie couldn’t recognise it as such. There is not a Christian on earth who is afraid of going to hell. Neither is there a Christian on earth who believes that we are saved by doing good works.

There’s a good saying that I think applies to you, “We do not become bigots because we’ve misinterpreted the facts. We misinterpret the facts because we’re already bigots.” Now, if you’re talking about Catholics, then that’s another story. They believe all sorts of goofy stuff that goes directly against what Jesus taught, but you certainly didn’t get those statements from Christians and that’s a fact.

The Bible also states that it's not anyone's place but your god's to make that determination. Robertson and his ilk are raging hypocrites who claim to speak for their (your) deity.

"Never trust a man who puts his words in the mouth of God and says it's absolute truth," sang Voltaire.

And don't attempt to play naive here. Robertson and company aren't trying to "warn" anyone about the perils of eternal torture by their just and loving god, they're using those pronouncements as a political tool. They proclaim that their hell-bound enemies are going to drag all the believers down with them unless substantial contributions are made and approved candidates are voted for.

I remember some anecdote about Jesus throwing a hissy-fit about such behavior. But then, I don't expect Robertson's type to actually know or care what the Bible says.

Oh, believe me, I do get those statements from Christians. Seriously, check out Pat Robertson, or Jerry Falwell. This is exactly the sort of behavior they exhibit.

Here are some quotes from Pat Robertson:

"Feminism encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

"Well, I totally concur." –Pat Robertson to Jerry Falwell following the Sept. 11 attacks, after Falwell said, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say: "You helped this happen."

"I know one man who was impotent who gave AIDS to his wife and the only thing they did was kiss."

"It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-biased media and the homosexuals who want to destroy all Christians."

So, let's talk about bigotry. It's rampant throughout your religion. I'm not making this shit up. You can look for these quotes on google yourself.

And let me remind you of a conveniently ignored verse in the bible: "Judge not, lest ye be judged."

And if you say that this verse, or any other verse in your bible doesn't apply to modern society, you cannot in all honesty call yourself a Christian. You can't just pick and choose which parts of the bible to follow. If you follow one verse in the bible, you have to follow them all.

And as for my statement of Christians being moral only because of the fear of hell, it is accurate. I have heard this from numerous Christians. I am not making it up. Why don't do a search on Google for these Christians? They are out there, and they are the majority. I'm not sure where you live, but this kind of bigoted, hypocritical behavior is common in the bible belt.

And don't say, "Well not all Christians are like that," because the fact that "true" Christians are letting these assholes spew their hateful speech shows that you are just as guilty as they are.

I'm always amazed at how many atheists listen to tv evangelists. I don't listen to them so why would you? I don't get it. Of course I don't want you to think that I'm putting words in Jesus' mouth regarding who is saved and who is not. So let me just give you these verses and you can decide which side of the fence atheists are on.

Mark 16:16 - Jesus said, “Those who believe and are baptized will be saved but those who refuse to believe will be condemned.”

John 1:12,13 - Jesus said, “Unless you are born again, you can never get into the kingdom of heaven.” There is no eternal doom awaiting those who trust Him save them. But those who don’t trust Him have already been tried and condemned for not believing in the only Son of God.

John 3:3 - “I tell you the truth, no one an see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

John 3:16-18 - “For God so loved that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe in him stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

John 5:24 - Jesus said, “I say emphatically that anyone who listens to My message and believes in God who sent me has eternal life and will NEVER be damned for his sins. He has crossed from death into life.”

John 6:40 - “For my Father’s will is that every one who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 8:24 - Jesus said, “For unless you believe that I am the Son of God, the Messiah, you will die in your sins.”

John 14:6 - “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Acts 13:38,39 - In this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who trusts in Him is freed from all guilt and declared righteous.

Romans 3:27,28 - Our acquittal is not based on our good deeds, it is based on what Christ has done and our faith in Him. So it is we are saved, by faith in Christ and not by the good things we do.

Romans 9:32 - Because they were trying to be saved by keeping the law and being good instead of by depending on faith, they have stumbled over that great stumbling stone, Jesus.

Galatians 2:19 - It was through reading the Bible that I came to realize that I could never find God’s favour by trying and failing to obey the law. I came to realize that acceptance with God comes by believing in Christ.

1st Thessalonians 1:8,9 - The Lord Jesus will bring judgement on those who do not wish to know God and those who reject His plan to save them through our Lord Jesus Christ. They will be punished in everlasting hell, forever separated from the Lord, never to see the glory of His power.

Me: Paraphrase of Matthew 7:1-2.

Makarios: 13 separate verses judging me.

Swing and a miss.

Thesauros said...

None of these are my words. If you don't like what they say, take it up with your Creator and Judge.

Còmhradh said...

And you keep missing the point.

Thesauros said...

The point? That point is, that we are told in many places TO judge; judge thoughts, judge behaviours, judge ideas. What we are not to do, and to which the verse you allude to is speaking, is to judge hypocritically.

Warning you of your inevitable end if you don't get right with God is not judging. It's telling you what Jesus said about the reality of eternity. I am commanded to warn you. I've done my job. You can do whatever you like with that information.

Maybe if you answered my question about which version of the Bible you're reading, that would allow me to understand where you're getting this notion from. Because my KJV just says "Judge not, that ye be not judged."

But you're apparently reading a version that tells you to be a self-righteous annoyance to the world at large and then wonder why people aren't on board with your particular world view.

Thesauros said...

It's called context. In sum chapters 5 - 7 say, treat others the way you would want people to treat you. And I can tell you in all honesty, if I was heading for an eternal disaster I'd want someone to warn me.

So would I. Turns out, nearly every sect on the planet tells me that if I don't accept their particular mythology, I'm going to suffer some sort of afterlife consequence. Which one should I choose? Were I a betting man, I'd probably go for the one with a lower risk even if it had a lower reward. Hinduism sounds nice. If I mess up completely, I get demoted and get to try again.

Of course, I'm not a betting man, and I haven't seen one modicum of evidence to suggest that the casino even exists.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
